Bay Area Tutoring Association is the San Francisco Bay Area’s only non-profit tutoring organization dedicated to the development of the tutoring profession for tutors of all ages. We believe tutoring is more than helping students improve their academic performance. It’s building relationships, sharing knowledge, empathy and bi-directional leadership development. If you’ve been a tutor, had a tutor, needed a tutor or know a tutor well, this challenge is for you! The Bay Area Tutoring Association will feature these amazing tutors, their businesses, stories of leadership, productive struggle (challenges), positive impact, and self-discovery in its newsletter and social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Meetup, Pinterest, Twitter etc.)

We want those inner authentic stories, creative pictures and inspiring captions of all shapes and sizes. For this challenge, tell your tutoring story with a photo that connects readers to that story (e.g. a photo of you with your tutor or tutee, a photo of you studying).

As in the emerging tradition of ViralSpace, there are 5 winners who earn 30%, 20%, 10%, 10% and 10% of the prize pool. There may also be special prizes outside of the normal prize pool, depending on the story and impact. Bay Area Tutoring Association is also providing 1 year free Bay Area Tutoring Association membership to all contestants from the Bay Area. Everyone is guaranteed to win something for participating.

Accepting:

      photos
      videos

Reward:

Prize Pool: $500 (up to $500)

Tips on what we're looking for:

High-resolution photos and videos (up to 15 seconds)
      Featuring people
      Featuring tutoring companies or brands
      Genuine stories in captions

being a senior in college - I have realized how important it is to surround yourself with things that make you happy to help you get through it all. for example, I covered my laptop in a few stickers that make me smile and inspire me. I look at them everyday when i'm doing my homework. it's the little things that inspire you to get through each day.

Tutoring is more than helping students improve their academic performance. It’s building relationships, sharing knowledge, empathy and bi-directional leadership development. I became a tutor my third year of college. I was nervous, because I have never taught in a group setting before. My first month on the job was challenging. Sometimes I couldn't answer my students' questions and I felt embarrassed. Sometimes I felt like my students hated me, and I brought this anxiousness to my sessions. I was able to get more comfortable speaking in front people, however, and saw tutoring as not just remediation, but as a mentorship. I wanted to be a role model for my students, not just a teacher. Thanks to the tutoring position I obtained, I was able to obtain an internship teaching English in Tokyo, Japan. My passion for teaching led me to the trip of a life time and I was extremely privileged to be able to be a tutor in another country, learning about another culture, and fostering relationships with lifelong friends who live 5,000 miles away. Being a tutor truly changed my life, and I cannot wait to jumpstart my future career in education. #TutorDiaries

I dropped everything in my hometown to take a risk and move to my dream city Los Angeles. I was accepted to my dream school, UCLA, and I worked so hard in high school to get here. My first few years were rough. I was homesick and had trouble making friends at this huge campus. My study habits couldn't keep up with UCLA's quarter system, and my grades started to fall. As a straight A student in high school, I felt like a failure as I was getting C's on my exams. It wasn't until I discovered the Academic Advancement Program at UCLA that I finally started to feel a sense of community all while receiving help in my coursework. My first tutor's name was David for Organic Chemistry. He made such a difficult course so easy to understand, providing me extra practice problems to ensure that I mastered the lecture. Because of David, I started getting A's in my courses. Today, I am graduating Summa Cum Laude at my dream school. I want to thank all of my tutors from the Academic Advancement Program for believing in me and helping me climb out of the dark hole that I was in four years ago. This is my #TutorDiaries

Honestly sometimes you just have to make yourself study. I didn't study at all for my public speaking class in college and got like Ds on all my tests. Then I decided to study like my friend Addie and got an A on the test. Studying helps and do what works for you.

In high school, I loved learning about history since facts seemed to be prophetic of our futures. However, once I got to college and started tutoring others on history and ethnic studies, I understand the importance of contextualizing history. This is a picture with some students I worked with about our collective Filipino history and identity.

One of my favorite things I like to do outside of FIRST Robotics Competition is holding workshops for the younger kids to expose them to STEM. What I really enjoy is seeing the joy and awe in them whenever they successfully built their Lego robot. One of the aspects that I've seen kids enjoyed is the programming part. This is where they get real excited to do whatever they want to their robot. I haven't had much experience with programming, but through every workshop I work with kids, I enjoy through this process of having fun and being creative in making the robot move. Being a part of FIRST Robotics is not always all about building a robot, but making an impact on your community through STEM.

Fall semester I took physiology and absolutely fell in love! The tutor from my university, UCF, was so helpful and made the information really easy to learn. Once I realized I was actually kind of good at this material, I decided I wanted to be like her and help others understand physiology as well! That’s when I applied to become a volunteer TA (teaching assistant)! And I actually got it! I’m going on my second semester as a VTA and knowing that I can help students understand, and therefore appreciate, this class as much as I did is so fulfilling! I intend on continuing on as VTA until I can become a TA and help students learn even more!

If I had not had you as my teacher in Year 7, my life would be incredibly different. I’m not saying it would be bad – but you opened my eyes to what I could be, what I could do, in a way that I’ve never thought possible. I still remember one lesson where you told us about your hopes for your future when you were our age. I think you were meant to be talking about science, but it changed, and kind of became a life study. You told us about your regrets, and your successes, and for some reason, it all resonated with me, and I started to realize that anything really is possible. You have changed my whole aspect on my learning, I wouldn't be where I am today without you. Your encouragement and persistence in my junior years has taught me that I am who I am, and to get to the top, it’s all down to me. I am capable, but it will take hard work and lots of dedication. Thank you Ms. Hillary

Mentorship changed my life. Mentorship allowed me to create the biggest impact possible in the least amount of time. Mentorship helped me reach my goals of 6 figure in my first year in business. It also helped me make a bigger impact for myself, loved ones, family and clients. Mentorship expanded my awareness, opportunities and grew my mindset. This is one of my mentors Alex. Before working with him, I had a hard time with sales and productivity. He showed me the way to the right path and led me to create my own path of success. I am a first generation college graduate and business owner. Without mentorship, I wouldn't have gotten here and for that I'm forever grateful. The biggest investment you can have is yourself! Invest in mentorship and reap the benefits like I did 💯

studying: the act of texting, snacking, and scrolling on Insta while you have a textbook open! HAHA my most frequent activity since high school ;) Story time: I grew up in the Bay Area in Fremont, CA and went to Irvington High School, and honestly with some of the crazy teachers, you NEED a tutor for the hardest subjects like math, physics, and chemistry. I had a tutor for AP Chem in high school from Bay Area Tutoring and she was incredible - she gave me different atomic models of her own to help me learn hands-on, and she encouraged me when I didn't believe that I would ever pass chemistry. I ended up getting an A in my chem class and a 5 on my AP test. Now, I'm thriving at UCLA and happy that I worked hard to pass my AP Chem class and reached out to a tutor for help. Thank you Bay Area Tutors - you guys are much needed!

From earning gas money in high school to paying college tuition as a first gen, fin-aid student, to now supporting me in taking a leap as I start my own parenting education start up, tutoring has been a constant source of financial support and personal growth. What I didn't expect, is that what I started doing at 14, would lead me down a long path to my life's work in education. ==== Long Version === I have been tutoring for over a decade on a variety of topics that range far and wide. My youngest student was 8, and my oldest student was an executive of a well established healthcare center in China. At each phase of my life, I brought my own learnings and growth to my tutoring style, and in return, my students helped me learn about myself. In high school, I applied my interests in speech and debate to teach other immigrant children SAT English, speaking and writing. I learned then that I had unique insights into student engagement and how different skills and topics were connected. Then, in the early years of my undergraduate at Yale, I tutored a pair of adopted Chinese girls living with a non-Chinese family who wanted them to understand their heritage. This helped me think deeply about my own identity as an immigrant, and explore what a hyphenated identity (Asian-American) might mean to me, even as I taught it. At the end of college, I tutored an executive from China in English conversation and pronunciation. He said he learned more from me than the decades of English classes he's taken. I learned from him to have confidence that my empathy and past experiences of overcoming my own challenges bring value to my students, regardless of age or other societal hierarchical constructs. When I worked as a consultant at McKinsey, I coached college students on their job search process, focusing especially on Asian students hoping to find jobs in the US. Those coaching relationships helped me reflect and find gratitude for my own upbringing and undergraduate experience that gave me the courage to choose a path that feels right for me. Knowing not everyone is so fortunate, I wanted to understand more institutionally how to enable others. I went to Stanford for an MBA and MA in Education, precisely to make this happen. At Stanford, I've continued to tutor and coach in a variety of topics. As I leave Stanford with a formal degree in what I knew all along, (that enabling others -through Education- to be their best is what matters most to me) I am emboldened by my years of tutoring to know that I can and will be able to support myself doing what I love. As I take the plunge and begin building my own start up that equips parents to better communicate and engage with their teens, I am beyond thankful for the financial support and doors that tutoring has opened for me throughout the years. I am even more thankful for my students who have shared their time and stories with me, and helped me discover a love for teaching that will last a lifetime.

studying: the act of texting, snacking, and scrolling on Insta while you have a textbook open!

When I first started volunteering as a tutor for young kids at my local library, I would constantly meet parents and their kids. However, one young man aged around 6 years has been memorable. I met him around four years ago and I remember his mom constantly thanking me and asking me about my day. Unlike most parents, she took time and made me realize that volunteering is always worth it. To this day, I remember her pestering her kid to indent two fingers between each word. Although I assured her he was fine, she would do it again. Thanks to them, I volunteer whenever I can, not for the hours or recognition, but for the warm feeling I get when I meet people like them

Wow! I can’t believe I’ve finally graduated, and with straight A’s. Math was always a tough subject for me as it didn’t come easy like English class. Luckily, I met Samantha this year and with her extra tutoring help I was able to maintain a good grade. When I was overly stressed about the final, she helped me come up with creative ways to remember formulas and I winded up getting an A on it too!! I couldn’t have come this far without my tutoring and I’m so thankful for all the time Samantha put into my success in math.

Powell Library at UCLA. Where we spent nights crying, yawning, chugging coffee...but it's where we also spent nights laughing, teaching, and learning. I love that my tutoring study group turned into a group of my best friends. I am so glad to have joined this tutoring group, because not only did I leave UCLA with a great GPA, but I also left with life-long friendships. This is my #TutorDiary

This was the first time I ever taught in front of a group of people. As you can tell, I was really nervous. What if I couldn't answer their questions? What if they didn't like me? What if they couldn't understand what I was explaining? All of those anxieties have subsided now of course. Now, I have developed the most meaningful mentor-mentee relationships as well as helped students achieve the grade that they wanted. Tutoring isn't for "dumb" students. Tutoring is for those who want to excel, and let me tell you that my students are STARS! #Tutor #Tutordiaries

He was my tutor my second year of college. I was struggling in LS4, the awful genetics class based on math and probability--my weakest subjects. Thanks to Ivan, I ended up getting an A in the class. Little did he know that I had a small crush, but it didn't matter because he was a fourth year and graduating that summer... Fast-forward two years, and we are in a happy, healthy relationship. This photo was from when he visited my hometown in Virginia. Sometimes, things are just made to happen. Well, this is my story of how my #tutor became my boyfriend! #TutorDiaries #ThanksUCLA

I recently graduated because of so much hard work and dedication not only I put into myself, but what my tutors put into me. Having a tutor has helped me understand things I never thought I’d be able to get, and gain confidence to ask questions. I would not have made it without my tutor, and as I go onto college I hope that I can find another tutor that will be with me every step of the way.

I would not have been able to get through my educational career if it weren’t for all the mentors, advisors, and counselors in my life! All the guidance I received in and outside of school were all the reasons behind my success today. I was taught to be well-rounded, independent, and humble! I think this really reflected in my college career where I learned more about myself, what I wanted to become, and how my experiences brought me to where I am today. Hard work, dedication, and persistence are all major values that I practice and it’s brought me to graduate top my of class and holding leadership positions in my extracurriculars! Thank you to everyone that has provided me their mentorship and guidance, I would not have been the person I am without them!

English was not my first language so I struggled with reading and writing. My mom got me tutor in junior high because I wasn’t doing as well as the other kids. Everyday I would ask to go to the library so I could practice reading on my own. This small thing that everyone else around me was so easy for others but I struggled. 10 years later, I am so thankful my mom got me a tutor. My English Reading and writing skills improved and thrived in college and now in the workforce. My tutor changed my life and I will be forever grateful. Thank you Tammy! ✨❤️ Love, your favorite student

I got to meet some incredible mentors at the BASES Women in Entrepreneurship Summit at Stanford, including Elizabeth, who is still my mentor today. I meet with her once per quarter (at least) and she's been there through all of my major career decisions, switching my major sophomore year, taking risks by turning down safe but unfulfilling job offers, and so much more. Career decisions are so much easier with an incredible mentor. I'm so thankful to have met her.

One of my most rewarding jobs in high school was working at the Muscular Dystrophy Assocation Camp. I was paired one on one with a camper and worked with them throughout the summer. I got to learn how to work with his unique needs and see his joy as he learned to swim, ride horses, make crafts, and so much more. Camp counseling is a fantastic way to grow your resume in high school while giving back and having a lot of fun!

My older brother is one of my biggest mentors. We both got our first jobs as math and reading tutors at Kumon. It was an incredible way to learn responsibility and get to work with kids -- something I absolutely love! Getting to watch elementary school kids grasp concepts like multiplication and watch them progress over the years is so rewarding. I grew close to several of my tutees and found joy in coming to work everyday. I'm thankful to my brother for introducing me to this job.

Yan Wing Lei- “flying bird”. I never thought much of the meaning behind my name until recently, and I confidently believe that it fits me perfectly. Choosing to go to Montgomery is one of the best choices I have ever made. Montgomery is my nest, my home, the place where I have grown and made my start with. I used to be so very shy four years ago, never speaking a word, scared, just like a baby bird who was newly hatched. But with the unconditional love from everyone I’ve grown so much!!
